Each February, we like to put extra effort into educating all of our pets\u2019 parents on caring for their pets\u2019 teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is Pet Dental Care So Important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The health of your pet\u2019s teeth is essential not only to maintain their lovely smile but also their comfort and safety. Poor oral health can lead to problems inside and beyond your pet\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Dental Care Affects Your Pet&#8217;s General Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Periodontal (gum) disease \u2014 the same kind that affects humans \u2014 is extremely common in both cats and dogs over age three. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums that occurs when plaque and tartar are allowed to build upon a pet\u2019s teeth. This buildup creates pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, periodontal disease causes problems like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red, swollen gums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bleeding of the gums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tenderness and soreness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty eating and drinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If left unaddressed, the bacteria which causes periodontal disease can spread to a pet\u2019s circulatory system, leading to a systemic infection that damages the pet\u2019s internal organs. Severe cases can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Care for Your Pet&#8217;s Teeth at Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend brushing your pet\u2019s teeth regularly with specially formulated pet toothpaste and a specially designed pet toothbrush. You can also provide your pet with dental-friendly treats and chew toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professional Dental Care for Pets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During your pet\u2019s annual wellness appointment, our veterinarian will check your pet\u2019s teeth, looking for external signs of gum disease or other dental health concerns.
